HAILU MERGIA (Etiopien, Awsome Tapes from Africa)
With Paweł Szpura & Mike Majkowski (Poland)
Following the re-release of ”Hailu Mergia & His Classical Instrument” on Awesome Tapes From Africa in summer 2013, Ethiopian keyboardist and composer Hailu Mergia embarked on his first set of shows in over 20 years end of last year. Now he is back for more Ethio-Jazz splendidness!
In 1985, master accordionist and veteran bandleader, arranger and keyboardist released the ”Hailu Mergia & His Classical Instrument” cassette. In a nostalgic effort to bring back the vintage accordion sound of his youth, Hailu gave Ethiopian music a sonic makeover using electric piano, analog synth and his beloved accordion. He was already celebrated for his work with the groundbreaking Addis Ababa Ethio-jazz and funk outfit Walias Band. With imagination and a visionary sense of the self-contained possibilities of modern music, he captured the popular sounds of the past using the modern tools of the day.
On the road, Hailu is being backed by Poland’s hottest young drummer Paweł Szpura and Berlin-based Australian Mike Majkowski (double bass), who has gained praise for his imaginative solo performances and sideman work for Peter Brötzmann and Han Bennink.
About Awesome Tapes From Africa
Awesome Tapes From Africa began in 2006 as an mp3 blog shedding light on regional music scenes and locally-produced cassettes from the African continent. It has grown into an internationally recognized, crowd-sourced public archive, record label and acclaimed DJ project.

THE OBSERVATORY (Singapore)
The Observatory, an independent avant rock band and experimental music arts group based in Singapore, creates music that is more than just a distinct sound. Their prolific output of five albums and a combination of indie and improv leanings reflect an obsessive intent to stifle inhibition and undermine mechanical ways of commercial music-making. The Observatory’s music is texturally complex, viscerally emotional and splintering in its bleakness. The attempt to cross wasted borders and find musical extremities that parallel polarities within human existence provokes and inspires in a deeply enigmatic way. The Observatory members are huge music fans. The gang of five draws inspiration from their Southeast Asian roots and contemporary heroes of new music and art. Their sound changes with every release and project, fusing unconventional structures, Asian rhythms, bold arrangements, improvisation, thought and expression, while borrowing from random music styles to stir up a potent concoction of emotionally powerful extremes.
